Applying Emotional Intelligence in Forest School

This 1-day CPD workshop is aimed at staff delivering or supporting Forest School sessions, who want to gain a clearer understanding of how their own levels of emotional intelligence (EQ) can affect their practice and the engagement of children in Forest School sessions. The workshop will introduce strategies on how to approach emotionally challenging conversations with children in a positive and empowering way and the compassionate understanding needed to support children displaying challenging behaviours. Participants will also explore how the woodland environment promotes a flourishing EQ, and how to adapt Forest School activities to the emotional and behavioural needs of their group. 

The workshop runs from 9am – 3pm

Topics Covered

– How EQ affects our practice and the children we work with
– Introduction to John Gottman’s 4 Emotional Responses and how they affect children’s emotional development
– The scientific benefits of the natural environment on mental health and emotional wellbeing
– How Mindfulness practice is supported by the Forest School environment
– Using Stephen Porges’ Polyvagal Theory to understand challenging behaviours
– How to create a bespoke Forest School activities programme to suit the behavioural and emotional needs of a group

– To feel more confident in supporting and signposting children with challenging behaviours

Entry requirments

Please note this workshop encourages self-reflection and some sensitive topics will be discussed throughout the day. Whilst our experienced staff will create a safe space for sharing, participants are asked to be mindful of and take responsibility for their own self-care needs both during and after the workshop.
