How the School will operate

We operate a full-time provision 36 weeks of the year Monday to Friday. Our timings are 10am to 4pm. We base our term dates on the Devon County Council term dates as published on the county council website.

We work on a learner led, forest school, experiential and project based social emotional curriculum, where life skills, coping strategies for behaviour and social situations are at the heart of the learning. Projects are designed to integrate curriculum elements with existing learner skillsets to ensure all learners can access curriculum elements without distinct subjects being taught and without reintroducing cycles of failure from prior learning experiences. Above all, growth mindset and personal responsibility are the focus to promote engagement and lifelong learning skills.

We take referrals for ASD and SEMH learners, particularly where it has been identified that a typical school setting is not appropriate (ie school phobic learners or those with high anxiety). It is advised that professionals visit sites to understand the nature of the delivery better prior to a placement as we are not a typical school setting.

We offer wrap around service wherever possible with counselling, drug and alcohol counselling and other services in house where possible. We will need to know the existing services accessed by learners and any additional services suggested through assessments to date so we can ensure that we can meet the needs of learners.

We are registered for KS2 and 3 learners and have 90 places across 5 sites. The school sites are in Okehampton, Tiverton, Exmouth and Exeter with our main site (90 places) in Shillingford.

We are commissioned by local authorities and placements are typically reliant on EHCP being in place. We accept learners from other LA’s apart from Devon, however we do not offer a residential element so learners would need to be within travelling distance of a site to attend.

If you are unsure whether we would be able to meet the needs of a learner please get in touch to discuss and we will make an assessment based on information provided as to whether we feel it would be suitable. The more information on learners, including site visits by learners, the better as far as making the right choice for learners goes.
