We are pleased to run a young carers team building programme every year in collaboration with Carewise, this enable young carers in their late teens and early twenties to enjoy some much needed respite, whilst also allowing them to develop the team working skills and social interaction that can be difficult to accomplish given the social isolation being a carer can create. They work on a variety of team building tasks throughout the day and work win groups to accomplish the tasks. This is a fun programme and the laughter and socialising is as important as the new skills learnt and the activities completed. A real favourite of these sessions is the campfire cooking, to sit and cook in a group is a truly social experience and it is impossible to feel isolation when you are sharing fire food and stories in the woodland in summer.
Key skills are also being learnt, such as food preparation and management, navigation, problem solving and coping with adversity or changing plans, these are real skills that can be taken back into life and can become part of a much needed toolkit for dealing with the stresses of everyday life. Fun and Function are the two buzzwords of the day and it is clear from the laughter and the honest reflections on the days activities that these two elements are met in abundance.
