We took over a training programme at Blundells Preparatory School that had previously been run by another company and altered the direction to suit the teaching staff better, we started with an inset day where we introduced outdoor learning, forest school and some of the campcraft and green woodworking skills. We mind mapped the logical curriculum links between outdoor learning and the curriculum and began a process of integrating the two.
Over a year later the process has developed a great deal, the school has had further training on curriculum links, we have helped to establish a solid and popular bushcraft after school club, we have helped to plan and deliver key stage outdoor learning days both linked to the curriculum and not. We have helped to train and create an outdoor learning team through our outdoor learning champions programme, this team has taken outdoor learning forward in many ways, including creative uses for the outdoor space, creation and use of a woodland plot for forest school and bushcraft, the development of an outdoor classroom, fire pit area and command tasks area within the school and has established outdoor learning as a core component of the schools ethos. We are currently still working with the school to further develop and showcase their achievements by looking into the achievement of the Learning Outside the Classroom school mark, a first for preparatory schools in the south west.
It has been fantastic to work with such a dedicated and enthusiastic team and to see how far they have taken outdoor learning within the school. We are proud to have been able to help the outdoor learning champions team at Blundells to achieve these great advances in outdoor education.
